I look forward to it! WPMU and WP standalone are pretty much on par with one another these days. WPMU tends to be released about a month after standalone WordPress with all the same features (subject to the multi-user environment). The main difference is from the site-wide Admin point of view. It's by no means complex though. Runs on a single database like WP, can have multiple domains mapped to it, too. Saves setting up blog after blog, each with a new database, from scratch and can benefit from being able to link and analyse collective data from across sites.

Might take you up on that.

Played with early versions of WPMU, but not lately. Drew a blank trying to convince others what a good idea it would be for all sorts of web based comms - margaritas ante porcos and all that.

I'd be happy to spend a morning/day with you looking at WPMU. It really is not more difficult than running a single blog and is so much more flexible when you want to throw up another site for testing. Setting up site-wide-tags is a ten minute job.

Hi Joss

It certainly sounds right, and I have a feeling that WPMU could be the next logical step, though for the moment we are going to try proof-of-concept demonstrator based on the standard WP edition: one thing at a time for my poor overloaded brain!

Good luck with your bids!

Have you thought about using WPMU + FeedWordPress. The advantage is that you could separate your aggregated archives into multiple sites (i.e. Regionally, Institutionally, etc.). The biggest bonus is that you could use the site-wide-tags plugin to then create an aggregate site of all the sites hosted on WPMU, which can then server as a central store for browsing and searching. I've written about it more here:

http://joss.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2009/03/25/open-calais-site-wide-tags-semantic-site-architecture/

and also have a related post here about feeds:

http://joss.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2009/04/15/addicted-to-feeds/

Note that as it stands, comments are not aggregated into the single site, although I guess this is just a setting that could be tweaked in the code. As for TweetBacks, there's a bunch of plugins that handle them. They're treated as trackback comments.

Could be a great project :-)
